Introduction to Coleman Hawkins [Best of Jazz] by Coleman Hawkins on CD


This 22-track CD would indeed be a very good introduction to legendary early-period jazz tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. It's a triptych through a few selected efforts as a young sideman going back to 1923, and into nine big-band dates and six small-group recordings the man fronted up to 1945. He's featured with the obscure Mound City Blue Blowers and prominent with the Fletcher Henderson, Benny Carter, and Cozy Cole orchestras, and with his own very large bands doing signature tunes "Body and Soul," "Stumpy," "Stuffy," and Dizzy Gillespie's bop evergreen "Woody 'n You." The collection also includes a quartet take of "Flyin' Hawk." You get a nice overview of how his sound was developed and refined, not to mention how the music and recording techniques improved over two-plus decades. ~ Michael G. Nastos, All Music Guide
