Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar [Expanded] by Johnny Cash on CD

Johnny Cash's first album, released on Sun in 1957, was a little more folkloric and traditional in bent than what he put on most of his singles, though not pronouncedly so. In fact, four of the tracks ("I Walk the Line," "Cry! Cry! Cry!," "So Doggone Lonesome," "Folsom Prison Blues") had already been hit singles. For the rest of the set, Cash drew on some older folk ("Rock Island Line," "The Wreck of the Old '97"), country ("(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle," "Remember Me (I'm the One Who Loves You)"), prison ("Doin' My Time"), and spiritual ("I Was There When It Happened") songs. Filling out the set was a good, rollicking Cash original, "Country Boy," and a rather sassy tune by the young Jerry Reed, "If the Good Lord's Willing." It's a good, solid record that's very much in the mold of his classic early Sun sound, with spare accompaniment that nevertheless often approaches a rockabilly-country bounce. The album's desirability is a little diminished by the presence of the material on numerous other compilations in the CD era, though it still stands well on its own. The 2002 Varese expanded reissue utilizes state-of-the-art digital masters and dips a little deeper into the vaults from the same period and sessions, throwing on the "Cry! Cry! Cry!" B-side "Hey, Porter," and the "I Walk the Line" B-side "Get Rhythm," and then goes the extra mile -- alternate takes of "I Was There When It Happened" and "I Walk the Line," plus a rendition of "Folsom Prison Blues" that pre-dates the familiar version by all of four months. The outtake of "I Was There When It Happened" is a bit less smooth, with the tempo changes and some of the harmony singing a bit more ragged than the issued version -- it's one take off from what the song ultimately was; "Folsom Prison Blues" lacks the ironic sensibility behind the hit, and is paced just a little faster than the rendition that became a classic, and Luther Perkins' guitar break is less compact, as though he were still working out what he would do with the song; and "I Walk The Line" is just as obvious a work-in-progress, the nuances of Cash's performance still coalescing -- as before, it's one or two takes away from the point where it would reach perfection. Those tracks will mostly be of interest to Cash completists, though even casual listeners might want to A/B the outtake and finished versions for a closer look at Cash's re-creative process. And the sound on all of the material is excellent, which is saying a lot, given that three of these tracks were withheld from the public for almost 50 years. ~ Richie Unterberger & Bruce Ed, All Music Guide
