Live: 9-4-00 - Washington, DC by Pearl Jam on CD

In a move to beat bootleggers to the punch, Pearl Jam decided to release each of their 2000 American concert performances in a series of inexpensive double-CD sets. The September 4th concert from Washington D.C. began without an opening act (scheduled openers Sonic Youth were unable to play due to a personal emergency) so the audience seems a little restrained for the first few songs. By the time the band launches into "Dissident" and their punk anthem "Do the Evolution," the whole building is alive. The cosmic "Nothing as it Seems" teams nicely with the soaring "Given to Fly," and the paired "Untitled" and "MFC" work even better. The band extends the tender "Daughter" by injecting sections of Sonic Youth's "Androgynous Mind" and "It's OK" by Portland, OR, indie rock band Dead Moon. Opening the second disc is a surprisingly intricate classical guitar piece played by Vedder which serves as an intro to the hopeful "Betterman" and is followed by a searing rendition of "Black" (one of the best versions on this tour). The first song back from their intermission is a tear through a song popularized by the Who entitled "Leaving Here" which is passionately faithful to the original. "State of Love and Trust," "Wishlist," and "Porch" all shine with bright guitar work from Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. As is the case with 99 percent of these Pearl Jam live recordings, the sound quality is spectacular; the two guitars are separated in stereo, the vocals are pushed to the front, and the rhythm section is clear and full, really representing the live show spectacularly. Eddie Vedder's flawless ukulele-only "Soon Forget" is preceded by a lengthy political speech (as is to be expected in Washington D.C.), and the closing romp through "Rockin' in the Free World" would put a smile on Neil Young's face. The song selection on this night steers away from some of the harsher songs in their repertoire but maintains a very positive energy level throughout. This show stands out as one of the best from this leg of the U.S. tour, and is a must for any Pearl Jam fan. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide
