Live In Paris 1974 by Bill Evans on CD


The touring Bill Evans Trio of 1974 included longtime bassist Eddie Gomez and drummer Marty Morell. This gig, recorded for the most part impeccably and issued on Spain's Gambit imprint, finds pianist and accompanists in excellent form. The program is split equally between uptempo numbers and ballads. The former include "Up with the Lark" and "34 Skidoo," a harmonically reinvented "If You Could See Me Now" that offers the pianist in prime bop mode, and "Sugar Plum." Even "Quiet Now" has a more sprightly tempo with Evans playing glissandi right from the intro. The true highlights are "Midnight Mood" and the incomplete "Twelve Toned Tune," as well as a gorgeous "Waltz for Debby." ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
