Live at the Barbican: London, 1984 by Oscar Peterson Trio on CD
This 1984 concert at London's Barbican Hall by the Oscar Peterson Trio (with Niels Pedersen and Martin Drew) was recorded for broadcast by the BBC, though it wasn't commercially issued for another dozen years. The pianist is in top form throughout the show, while Pedersen's intricate bass solos rank him alongside Ray Brown as one of the top bassists to work with this jazz legend. Among the many highlights are the hard-driving opener, "Falling in Love With Love" (with a hilarious brief detour into "Rockin' in Rhythm"), a striding and bluesy "Who Can I Turn To?," and another one of his favorite standards, "Old Folks," heard in an arrangement that changed little over time. Peterson's originals include the flashy "Cake Walk" (which no one could possibly dance to!) and the pretty ballad "Night Child" (thankfully omitting the electric piano used to record the original version on the Pablo release of the same name). The CD concludes with a 1990 interview of the artist by Geoffrey Smith. This well-recorded date will have great appeal to fans of Oscar Peterson. ~ Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
