Mozart: Symphonies 29-31, 34,38 & 39 by Daniel Barenboim on CD
In an age where early classical works are now being recorded almost exclusively within the bounds of authentic practice, this re-release by EMI of Daniel Barenboim conducting seven of Mozart's best symphonic gems is a heavenly gift. These recordings, all made in Barenboim's relatively early years during the '60s and '70s, were originally released by EMI in 1991 as part of a similar set. For some, skepticism might initially preclude a listen to these discs -- after all, "good pianist, bad conductor" tends to be the basic sentiment in many musical circles surrounding the work of Barenboim, a native Argentinean. But, quite simply, these are some of the most outstanding renditions of Mozart ever achieved, especially of the somewhat lesser-known symphonies that encompass the bulk of these discs (Nos. 29, 30, 31, 33, 34, 38, and 39). Since many will be unfamiliar with these little gems (especially No. 33), this disc affords the perfect opportunity to get to know many of them in their finest form. The delicate Symphony No. 29 in A major opens the first disc and will gently persuade you to keep listening. Barenboim is able to sculpt the English Chamber Orchestra into anything and everything this music needs: warmth, intimacy, color, and above all, sensitivity. You can simply hear the empathy with which Barenboim and the orchestra exchange with each phrase. There is a visceral attentiveness these collaborators seem to give each other -- no doubt Barenboim has been able to put his chamber music experience to use here. While the orchestra sounds crisp, fresh, and clear -- there is, at the same time, a tone elicited that is rich in spirit and flavor. While some of the first-movement introductions might seem slow by the fast-paced standards of today (for Nos. 38 and 39), all musicology aside, these are the de-facto performance traditions of the so-called "golden age" of classical music. Regardless of your individual tastes, Barenboim overwhelmingly succeeds in giving each symphony, each movement, each phrase, and each note a world unto its own. This is real, genuine music-making at its best -- a must have! ~ C. Ryan Hill, Rovi
