Now Here's Johnny Cash [Bonus Tracks] by Johnny Cash on CD


Varese's series of Sun-era Johnny Cash LPs rolls on with Now Here's Johnny Cash, adding five bonus tracks to the original LP release. Recorded between 1954 and 1958, many of the sessions were later tweaked by Sam Phillips and Jack Clement (adding reverb to Cash's vocals, or adding background musicians) for the original 1961 release. One nice thing about the reissue is that four of the bonus tracks are the original undubbed versions, revealing a more stripped-down sound, more indicative of the production sound on the rest of Cash's Sun output. Several big hits ("Hey, Porter!," "Home of the Blues," "Cry! Cry! Cry!") made it onto the collection, as well as lesser-known renditions of "Sugartime" and "Down the Street to 301" (which could be a companion piece to his earlier hit "Ballad of a Teenage Queen"). Overall, completists and collectors may be glad to see this relative oddity surface, but casual fans will find that other collections will better serve their Johnny Cash fixes. ~ Zac Johnson, All Music Guide
