Pilgrimage to Santiago by John Eliot Gardiner on CD

This recording grew out of the Monteverdi Choir's actual pilgrimage from southwest France to Santiago de Compostela in 2004, during which it performed the music in the churches where pilgrims making the journey would have heard it. The acoustics of the recording convincingly convey the variety of settings in which the music would have been heard; some solos have the ambience of a small chapel, larger reverberant spaces seem to be the settings for the massed choral works, and the processions have a sense of spatial movement. The repertoire ranges from the twelfth to the early seventeenth century, from selections from the Codex Calixtinus to motets by Tomas Luis de Victoria, reflecting the variety of music pilgrims would have heard on their travels. The Monteverdi Choir, led by John Eliot Gardiner, sings with pure, straight tone and strict rhythmic precision. As is fitting for the theme of religious pilgrimage, all the works here (except for Guillaume Dufay's gangly motet Rite Majorem) are reverent and meditative, but the diverse musical styles and varied ensembles keep the consistently subdued music from becoming monotonous. The attractively packaged CD includes essays, texts, and translations. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi
