Prokofiev: Symphony-Concerto; Cello Sonata by Han-Na Chang on CD

Few composers posses such stark differences in their output as Sergey Prokofiev. These differences come in large part from works written as anti-Stalinist works, and those when Prokofiev yielded to the musical wishes of the communist government. Prokofiev's two main works for cello -- the Symphony-Concerto, Op. 125, and the Cello Sonata, Op. 119 -- brilliantly exemplify these differences. The Symphony-Concert (often referred to as Sinfonia Concertante) is one of the most savage, brutal pieces in the repertoire. The performance of it is utterly draining on cellists, and anyone who has had the opportunity to see the work performed live would agree that the audience itself is exhausted after watching the feats of acrobatics. The Cello Sonata, however, is a beautifully lyrical composition, filled with some of the most glorious melodies in the cello repertoire. This EMI album features cellist Han-Na Chang, the London Symphony Orchestra, and conductor/pianist Antonio Pappano. Technically, Chang's performance of the Sinfonia Concertante is nearly flawless, with intonation far superior to even that of her mentor, Rostropovich. What Chang lacks that Rostropovich possessed in abundance is the ability to make "ugly" sounds from time to time. That is, Chang rarely plays with enough aggressiveness. It'd be nice to hear some string buzz or crunched chords from time to time in the ferocious moments of this piece. Her playing of the sonata is equally superb from a technical standpoint. Musically, however, both she and Pappano come across as a little dull and without the heart and soulfulness that other performances of the sonata may offer. ~ Mike D. Brownell, Rovi
