Roost Quartets by Stan Getz on CD
After leaving Woody Herman's Orchestra, tenor-saxophonist Stan Getz became one of the leaders of the "cool school" due to his attractive light tone and his strong jazz abilities. This CD features his 1950-51 quartets. On the first seven selections, Getz is accompanied by pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Roy Haynes; they play such numbers as "On the Alamo," "Yesterdays" and the appealing "Hershey Bar." By late 1950 Getz had a new band, a rhythm section that he had discovered and immediately hired in Connecticut. Although bassist Joe Calloway and drummer Walt Bolden are obscure, pianist Horace Silver later became a major star. On his recording debut (15 performances including three alternate takes), Silver displays a style that was already recognizable and fit in perfectly with Getz. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
