Tchaikovsky: Overture Solennelle "1812"; Romeo and Juliet; Sibelius: Karelia Suite, Op. 11; Valse Triste by Colin Davis on CD

When confronted with a recording, the three essential questions are: how is the music? how are the performances? and how is the sound? In the case of this 1979 Tchaikovsky/Sibelius double bill featuring Colin Davis leading the Boston Symphony Orchestra, while the music ranges from the terrible to the terrific and the performances range from the straightforward to the inspiring, the sound is unequivocally staggering. Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is colorful, tuneful, and thrilling, but more or less incoherent, while his Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture is dark-hued, passionate, exciting, and dramatically cogent. Similarly, Sibelius' Pohjola's Daughter Symphonic Fantasy is rugged and relentless, his Karelia Suite is stirring and immediately memorable and his Valse triste is morbid and unfortunately unforgettable. With the BSO performing like a single finely tuned but many voiced instrument, Colin Davis' turns in a straightforward but convincing 1812 complete with opening chorus and closing fireworks, a forcefully convincing Romeo and Juliet, an immensely compelling Pohjola's Daughter, a sweet but dreary Valse triste, and an oddly listless Karelia Suite. But with superlative super audio digital sound remastered from Philips' transparent stereo originals, every performance here is so vividly present one can hear clarinet player Harold Wright's fingers on the keys of his instrument. ~ James Leonard, Rovi
