The Collection [1996 Madacy] by Bob Marley & The Wailers on CD
There ought to be a law, and if more politicians were Bob Marley & the Wailers fans, one could guarantee there would be. Back in 1994, the Madacy label bounded onto a crowded field with their two-CD compilation King of Reggae. This, like a plethora of other Wailers sets, was drawn exclusively from the group's in-between years that coincided with the early reggae age, when the group was busily recording with a clutch of different producers before signing to Island. The following year, Madacy released Hot Hot Reggae, a one-disc compilation that bundled together a batch of tracks off of King, and threw in three of that set's many notable omissions. And now comes this three-CD set, The Collection. Even a third-grader can do the math, working out that if you bought the last two compilations, you still come up nine songs short. Needless to say, fans are left gnashing their teeth, because this set was obviously the place to start, and now they're left with two redundant sets. However, they can also take heart, because so often has all this material been recycled, chances are they've got those nine numbers on other albums. "Trench Town Rock," "Kaya," "400 Years," "Stop the Train," and "Fussin' and Fightin'" should already be on your shelves. If they're not, there are plenty of other single sets that will provide them.
