The Immigrant: A New American Musical [Original Cast] by Immigrant on CD

The immigrant quest for a better life is a quintessential American experience. What is America, after all, but a land of immigrants? Perhaps this accounts for the continued popularity of Mark Harelik's The Immigrant, as well as Sarah Knapp (lyricist) and Stephen M. Alper's (composer) effort to convert the play into a musical. The Immigrant originally told the story of a Russian Jew who settles in a small, Protestant town in Texas around the turn of the century. In Knapp and Alper's hands, the story follows two couples. Husband and wife Haskell and Leah have immigrated from Russia to the Texas town; husband and wife Milton and Ima, on the other hand, bring the Jewish couple into their Protestant home. The Immigrant's songs, then, cover the conflicts that erupt as each couple adjusts to the customs and habits of the other. In "I Don't Want It," for instance, Leah worries that she and her husband are losing their Jewish heritage: how can she have a child in a strange land with strange ways? In "A Stranger Here," Ima worries about taking on a Russian Jew as a tenant, while Milton is much more practical: Haskell is a paying customer. The joy of The Immigrant: A New American Musical is that these conflicts -- and their eventual resolutions -- are worked out in tuneful songs, which are well sung. An enjoyable listening experience. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi
