The Louisiana Rhythm Kings and Red and His Big Ten by Red Nichols on LP
This collector's LP (which looks like a bootleg due to its blank back cover and its incomplete personnel listing) has some hot performances from a pair of groups headed by cornetist Red Nichols. The Louisiana Rhythm Kings' dozen songs alternate obscurities with future standards and sometimes have so-so vocals by Wesley Vaughan but contain solos from Nichols, trombonist Glenn Miller, Babe Russin on tenor, bass saxophonist Adrian Rollini and Jimmy Dorsey doubling on clarinet and alto. The LP concludes with four selections from "Red and His Big Ten" which has similar personnel along with the addition of clarinetist Benny Goodman. Excellent music, much of which is not readily available elsewhere. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
