The Satin Doll Collection by Duke Ellington on CD
Collectables' The Satin Doll Collection contains five previously compiled Ellington albums, The Best of Duke Ellington/New Mood Indigo (which is technically two albums already combined in 2001), All Star Road Band, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, Love You Madly, and The Strayhorn Touch. The music is all played by Ellington's smaller ensembles, not the big band or orchestra, and there are a lot of repeated songs here ("Take the 'A' Train," "The Mooche," "Mood Indigo," "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue") and none of the albums are stellar in themselves (Love You Madly has especially bad sound quality), which means that The Satin Doll Collection isn't the most fantastic or comprehensive Ellington compilation out there, but it does cover a lot of Duke's biggest hits -- "Sophisticated Lady," "Perdido," and "Caravan," just to name a few. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide
