The Very Best of Love by Roy Orbison on CD
Released just in time for Valentine's Day 2003, The Very Best of Love was a series from Madacy Entertainment that collected romantic songs from well-known, highly saleable crooners like Elvis Presley, Luther Vandross, and Roy Orbison. Orbison's chapter of the collection includes everything the casual fan would want in an Orbison greatest-hits, and nothing at all of note to aficionados or collectors. Every song on this album appears on any one of the other 30-plus Orbison retrospectives on the market -- in fact, most do a better job of tracing the arc of Orbison's career, from unlikely rockabilly troubadour to teen death drama balladeer. However, this is of no concern to The Very Best of Love. It includes Orbison's signature tunes -- "Oh Pretty Woman," "Crying," "In Dreams" -- and throws the good-time rockabilly strut of "Candy Man and a cover of the Everly Brothers' "All I Have to Do Is Dream" into the mix for balance. While "Only the Lonely" does not appear here, this is probably because The Very Best of Love's producers were interested in sequencing the album for its greatest romantic effect, and Orbison's career-defining song doesn't so much warm the heart as break it. ~ Johnny Loftus, All Music Guide
