The Very Best of the Modern Jazz Quartet [Music Brokers] by The Modern Jazz Quartet on CD


Recorded live in the early '60s, this set might be misnamed -- perhaps it should have been called The Best of the Modern Jazz Quartet Live or some such. That said, there is no doubt that what is here is not only solid, but at times spectacular. The live renditions of material from MJQ's Atlantic period, such as "The Comedy" and "Midsummer," are close to definitive recorded performances. Of the earlier material played with this much maturity -- "Django," "How High the Moon," and "Bluesology" (all date from the group's Prestige period in the 1950s) -- it can be said that the new rhythmic and harmonic inventions are the work of a group still pushing the envelope of even the familiar.
