You're Just in Love: The Early Hits by Rosemary Clooney on CD


As of January 1, 2003, all recordings made up through the end of 1952 were in the public domain in Europe, where copyright lasts only 50 years. In the case of Rosemary Clooney, who began recording as a solo artist for Columbia Records in 1950, that seems to have brought a critical mass of tracks into availability to reissue labels specializing in unlicensed compilations based on transfers from old vinyl: at least a CD's worth of material, including many hits. Thus, a flood of spurious Clooney discs hit the market, and this collection from the British Sepia label is just one of them. The 25 tracks include most of Clooney's initial spate of chart singles: "You're Just in Love" (a duet with Guy Mitchell); "Beautiful Brown Eyes"; "Come On-a My House"; "Mixed Emotions"; "I'm Waiting Just for You"; "If Teardrops Were Pennies"; "I Wish I Wuz"; "Be My Life's Companion"; "Tenderly"; "Half as Much"; "Botch-A-Me (Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina)"; "Too Old to Cut the Mustard" (with Marlene Dietrich); and "Blues in the Night" (but not "You'll Never Know" or "The Night Before Christmas Song"). Many of these are light-hearted novelties, of course, but there are also suggestions of Clooney's later expertise with standards, particularly on songs like "Over the Rainbow." If this collection had contained more of those, it would be a better selection of her early Columbia recordings. As it is, the album is about average in a crowded field. ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
