Sessions 84-88 (Import) by Humanoid on LP
Humanoid was an early project by eventual Future Sound of London member Brian Dougans. It scored a brief dancefloor hit with 1988's "Stakker Humanoid" (which is included here in remixed form), but mainly Humanoid helped incubate electronica sounds that would develop over the ensuing years. Of its 23 tracks, some are fully formed, others are quick sketches. But given that they were all recorded or conceived between 1984 and 1988, it's kind of amazing to hear how similar they sound to likeminded music that would arrive later by artists such as Aphex Twin, as well as Dougans' own work with FSOL. Dominated by analog tittering, robotic voices, and proto-industrial drum programming, Sessions 84-88 is worth a listen for anyone curious about the roots of Future Sound or present-day electronic music in general. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
