Description

Mentshn It! on CD

'Mentshn It!, by Millie and the Mentshn, is a terrific album, in fact, it is downright addictive.' Jack Frymire, Whatcom Independent Millie and the Mentshn create original musical arrangements to suit their unique instrumentation and "chamber klezmer" style. The music captures changes in mood; the lyrics convey daily life, love, school, work, children, wars, immigration, and the struggle to hold on to tradition. Overall, the songs reveal the powerful will to survive in the soul of the Jewish people. There is something special about sharing stories from the past and there is something comforting in knowing where you come from and passing it on 'fun dor tsu dor' (from generation to generation). The majority of the music on this CD is from Millie and the Mentshn's 'Songs Never Silenced*', a multimedia performance of the music and history of the Jewish people. Several songs from Shmerke Kaczerginsky's collection 'Lider Fun Di Getos Un Lagern' ('Songs of the Ghettos and Concentration Camps') are included. Kaczerginsky (1908-1952), a poet and folklorist, became a partisan fighter after the death of his young wife in the Vilna Ghetto in April, 1943. After the war he hand-wrote hundreds of songs that he remembered or gathered from others to add to the historical record and to honor the memory of those who died. The concert program illustrates a clear connection between historical events and styles of selections composed before, during, and after the Holocaust. *Title used with permission from Velvel Pasternak This CD includes extensive liner notes with story about each song and complete lyrics in Yiddish and English. Ken Bronstein, oboe Phil Heaven, viola and violin Millie Johnson, vocals Lou Lippman, piano Warren Palken, drums and percussion.
