Description

Spirituals on CD

'Radha Botofasina at once recalls the ancestors of the singing spirit of Bessie Smith and all the jazz and gospel greats who have laid the groundwork for negro spirituals in American Music. Her renditions of such classics as 'Come Here Lord','Motherless Child' and 'Trouble of the World,' give claim to the painful beauty in these songs. But Botofasina puts her own stamp on the 14-track collection. While you can easily hear the texture and richness of her voice, there's also perhaps a subconscious funk-inspired lilt when she sings 'Trouble of the World.' This all evokes Ms.Botofasina's courage as a performer, not to rewrite these standards of ancestry andstruggle, but to usher them into a new millennium.' _-Camilo Smith John Lehman is one of Los Angeles best kept secrets. He is a master pianist that specializes in the sacred music of the African American Diaspora. His sensitive rhythmic arrangements lift every song on this CD to World Class standards. Some of the musicians participating in this project are: Charles Neville on Swing Low, A. Butto Pattanaik on Radha Ramana, Surya Botofasina on Swing Low bass, SaiLa Reyes violinist on Here's One, If You See My Savior and Deep River. Ramsey Embick is on organ. David Crawford is playing flute on Motherless Child. Leon Sylvers arranged the background vocals on Consideration. Leon and his sister Patricia sang all of the background parts as well on Consideration. Shyam Tony Reyes, John P.& Mirabai Henderson,V. Pierce along with Radha sang the majority of the background parts featured on this CD. Ranjani Reyes is singing a duet with Radha on RadhaRamana Hari. It is a wonderful tribute to the ancestors who originated this art form, born out of sorrow and fashioned it into a unique vocal artform.
