Rana Ross was born in Brooklyn, NY on October 30, 1961. She began playing music at the age of four. Starting on acoustic classical guitar, Rana slowly graduated to lower and lower instruments, from viola in grade school to cello in junior high, to 4-string bass, 5-string bass and ultimately 6-string. She studied at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, as well as the Musicians Institute and the defunct Dick Grove School of Music, both in Los Angeles. Growing up in a single parent home, she credited her Mom with exposing her to artists like Earth, Wind and Fire, Stanley Clarke, The Brothers Johnson, Sly and the Family Stone and others. Being intrigued with the L.A. vibe and ready to move away from home, she took a giant step and headed for the left coast in 1987. 'I came out here with one bass and one suitcase and knew only one person,' Rana recalled. 'I moved out here knowing that I would have no excuse to not make it because I'd be in Los Angeles and I'd have to make it.' As Rana stated, 'I learned so much, you know, when you're young, you meet a lot of people, I got to hang with Jeff Berlin, he taught me a whole bunch of stuff, and Alexis Sklarevski, he's a great player, I learned a lot of my slap style through Alexis. And (Gary) Willis was one of my teachers too, he's a dear friend, and I took private lessons from him as well. I copped some of his 3-finger technique and he made some of his 'ramps' for me.' Rana had played with the 1980s group 'Phantom Blue' as their bassist in 1994 when Kim Nielsen, the original bassist, left the group. She joined them shortly after the release of their second album, 'Built To Perform'. She also played with the group 'Tangerine' from 1997 to 1998, and was a touring member of the all-girl group, 'Vixen' in 1997. Rana then went on to play with Live Nude Girls. Rana played bass and sang backup vocals for the hard rock metal group 'Sinboy.' While Sinboy was a rock band, Rana was much more than a rock bassist. 'I think it's normal human nature that people will look at whatever you're doing and compartmentalize you, but the last thing I ever want to be is a 'chick bass player',' said Rana. 'In the future, when people look back on me, I want to be known as like, 'Yeah, she was a Bass player' and that I could play any style and that I could do it well.' Rana used a Hohner B Bass V and a Hohner B Bass VI. Her main 5-string was a lightweight, fierce sounding B model. It used active electronics, EMG designed J-style pickups, had a solid maple body with a California Maple neck thru body design. She also used Hohner's Acoustic/Electric 4-string bass for some live radio appearances. Rana had a custom 5-string Fodera Monarch made for her in 1993. She owned a Jack Read bass and a white 5-string Spector. While interviewing in November, 2000 with Global Bass, Rana commented that she hoped her music would end up sounding a little like a mix of Primus, NIN and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rana passed away in May of 2003. She spent her last months concentrating exclusively on recording this CD. Contact Rana Ross Finally CD at this email address: finallycd@ranaross.com.
