Description

Horntoad on CD

Between 1980 and 1996, Ric Slagle was a young, itinerant, sax player based out of Baltimore, MD, and upstate New York. He frequented mostly blues clubs and the popular haunts of the times in Baltimore, Washington, and New York. He sat in with Stevie Ray Vaughn and others who went on to major music careers, but never recorded on his own until 1992, when pressure to record caused this first release, Horntoad, to receive positive reviews. 'I often used a fairly large setup with my Selmer Mark 7,' says Rick,'a big Rovner #10 mouthpiece with the Rico black 3 1/2 reeds, just like Clarence.' This recording features Dick Kniss, of Peter, Paul, and Mary fame, on stand-up bass, and other notables such as Cindy Cashdollar, on dobro, and Elda Gentile and Beth Hay on vocals. Personal Sales and Marketing skills were not enough to sustain us a career in the USA, so we left to play a full time blues gig in Mexico with Genaro Palacios Clemow's Gato Gordo Blues Band, which resulted in another release, The Rick Slagle Blues Project, a horn-soaked collection, again, mostly of cover songs. While in Mexico, I fell in love, and married my indigenous sweetheart, and have not been present on the music scene for awhile due to being a dad and moving back to the U.S. As a dynamic, self-styled, player, his recordings are worth a listen, and might become favorites among your music collection.
