Root Villa on CD

Root Villa was Rocky Tinder and Eric Phipps (both now of Portland favorite Wampire) plus Rafn brothers Kevin (Massive Moth) and Daniel. All four members are brilliant writers and performers, and the band's rich vocal harmonies and magical instrumental textures charmed many fans in Salem, Oregon from 2003-2008. Brilliant writing and rare familial group feeling made the band a standout. Rocky's songs (many of which were easily as good as the ones he's writing now for Wampire) have an enchanted and vulnerable pop sense, and absolutely haunting and wonderful melodies. Kevin Rafn was arguably the genius of the band, and his songs were loaded with intricate structures and wordplay. Eric also occasionally contributed songs and Daniel added his careful, layered production skills. Try sampling "Soothing Song", "Super Brains" and "Gourd Song" to get an idea of Rocky's songs, all still potential indie movie hits. "Flare For The Obvious" and "Sphinx's Riddle" are good ones to try to get an idea of Kevin's fecund compositional skills. The group definitely thought in terms of an album experience, however, and this gently exploding record repays dozens of listens.
