First exposed to the public via contributions to the soundtracks for BRIDGET JONES (the bossa nova/funk hybrid "Love") and SHALLOW HAL (an Edie Brickell-ish "Afterlife"), former A&R scout-turned-musician Rosey unloads with her genre-defying debut DIRTY CHILD. Possessing a breathy alto that falls somewhere between Rickie Lee Jones and Fiona Apple and a penchant for funk not unlike fellow soul sister Nikka Costa, it's not surprising this bi-coastal phenom refers to her style as urban rock & roll. Aided by Macy Gray producer Darryl Swann, Rosey easily switches gears from the soaring and Bowie-esque "Beautiful" and lo-fi blues shuffle "My Baby" to the harder-hitting, beat-heavy groovefest "Like A Dream" and Sly-driven funk of "The Time."
Elsewhere, DJ cuts and jittery Neptunes-like production are sprinkled throughout the swirling "Desperate," while the erotically-charged "One" bounces along on the back of a fat trip-hop beat while pulling elements from both Janet Jackson and Nilsson. Alluringly eclectic and musically ambitious, Rosey and her creative originality make this one DIRTY CHILD that doesn't need any cleaning up at all.
Entertainment Weekly (7/12/02, p.84) - "...As cool as anything you'll hear this summer...an ambitious effort..." Rating: B+
CMJ (7/1/02, p.12) - "...A crafty cocktail of countless styles...a Carly Simon and Fiona Apple martini...it's easy to get drunk on Rosey."
