Director Winner switched the setting of Chandler's classic Marlowe mystery from 1940s Los Angeles to 1970s London, perhaps to avoid comparison with its forerunner. The 1946 Bogart/Bacall masterpiece is a tough act to follow, but this version is interesting in its own right for Mitchum's take on the fabled private eye.
Filmmaker Michael Winner switched the setting of Raymond Chandler's classic mystery novel from 1940's Los Angeles to 1970's London. When wealthy General Sternwood is blackmailed, he hires private detective Philip Marlowe to help him out. As a result, the gumshoe gets mixed up with the crippled general's troubled daughters: Charlotte and her younger, sex-crazed sister, Camilla. Although Charlotte is the smarter of the two, she has still managed to become involved in a potentially dangerous affair with Eddie Mars, a married gangster whose wife has mysteriously disappeared. Meanwhile, Camilla is in hot water for having posed for nude photos.
Before long, several murders have taken place and Marlowe must get to the bottom of it all... while trying to stay alive himself.
