Rhino Flashback's budget compilation Love Songs highlights ten tracks covering the laid-back, romantic tunes Conway Twitty recorded during his tenure with Elektra in the '80s. These are the original versions and include the number one hits "Somebody's Needin' Somebody," "Lost in the Feeling," "I Don't Know a Thing About Love," and "Slow Hand." ~ Al Campbell
Contrary to the back cover's claim, Conway Twitty did record quite a lot of love songs over the years -- they might not have been romantic, but most of his songs were about romantic relationships, which could be easily labeled love songs -- but this 14-track collection does a fine job of capturing romantic highlights from his decades at MCA-associated labels. There are several hits here, such as "I'd Love to Lay You Down" and "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'," yet this isn't designed as a hits album -- it's mood music, and on that level, it succeeds quite well. Twitty's warm baritone was quite seductive, and he had usually had fine material, which means this collection of highlights is quite alluring, even seductive, in its own way. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Conway Twitty sang relatively few love songs, so this well chosen collection, recorded between 1967 ("Walk Through This World With Me") and 1981 ("Lovin' What Your Lovin' Does to Me"), represents pretty much the cream of the crop. It also makes a strong case for Twitty's artistic vision having been in place from the beginning.
Despite the changes in technology, the songs here sound like they were recorded at one marathon session rather than over nearly two decades. Highlights include two duets with Loretta Lynn, and "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'," which, deservedly, was one of his signature tunes.
