Containing 11 previously issued cuts from the back catalog of Blue Note, this mix of new and old artists takes a stab at the songbook of one of Brazil's most important artists. While some artists here may not be the best representatives for re-interpretation of Jobim, they all easily imprint their own unique styles and improvisations around his famous melodies. For the most part, these are straightforward interpretations of the originals, and while they offer nothing insightful, they do not do them a disservice, either. The chief complaint with this session is the selection of some merely good performances over fantastic ones in the Blue Note catalog that do knockout interpretive jobs. For example, Grant Green's rendition of "Corcovado" is one of several that could have been used in place of Cassandra Wilson's -- which is not to discredit her performance, but rather display the depth of Blue Note's back catalog and show just how deep into the label's history Jobim's influence reaches. Nevertheless, this is a disc that should appeal to casual fans of jazz and Jobim fanatics alike, regardless of their familiarity with the man's songbook. ~ Rob Theakston
