Konami's critically lauded soccer franchise makes its sophomore appearance on Wii consoles with a focus on improved control schemes and expanded games modes in Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. The "point-and-drag" system from the Wii version of Pro Evolution 2008 returns with a new emphasis on defense and shooting, while more traditional gamers now have the ability to oversee the action by holding the Wii Remote sideways or using the Classic Controller. Players can now participate in the UEFA Champions League competition, try out an updated version of the incentive-based "Champions Road" mode, or, for the first time on Wii, take part in the franchise-style "Master League" mode.
In "Champions Road," players perform specific tasks, such as scoring a hat trick, in order to earn cash bonuses that can then be spent on a variety of club improvements. The "Master League" mode lets gamers oversee every aspect of their team in an attempt to turn a perennial doormat into a title contender through shrewd signings, good performances, and improved training methods. An enhanced online mode supports up to eight gamers in four-on-four matches, and Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 also let players use their created "Mii" characters in the "Match" and "Champions Road" modes. ~ Christopher Brown, All Game Guide
