An alien race inhabits Earth and, as all humans are mysteriously gone, they take physical form in the bodies of vanished people--and fictional characters--like Christ, Ringo Starr, and Orpheus. In these bodies, the aliens attempt to decipher the bizarre cultural relics left behind, all the while slowly adopting the values of human civilization.

The deeper tale concerns, however, the way those who are "different" must deal with the dominant cultural ideology. The tale follows Lobey's mythic quest for his lost love, Friza.
