This CD opens with a rare trio session for a tiny label called Mary Howard Recordings. These records were issued in an album which makes sense since the music is quite homogenous. Chittison had occasionally recorded classical materiel before but this was not his real specialty. However, after innumerable nights playing for revelers all over the world, he certainly knew how to do that too. Indeed, few jazz pianists from his generation managed to play Chopin or Grieg in a satisfying manner. "Anitra's Dance," also recorded by stride master Donald Lambert in 1941, is exciting.
