Making Lemonade on CD

Many thanks for all the motivation, support and inspiration by friends known and unknown. It is not possible to list them all, but all are present in the warp and woof of the music on this disc. All musicians draw from the well, and my draught includes Duke Ellington, Mozart, Count Basie, James Brown, Debussy, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Mark Knopfler, Duane Allman, and a personal mentor, Harry Spiller-a bassist of prodigious capabilities. A trusted friend listened to these songs, and described them as 'eclectic'. I realized that, although I hear this word used liberally, I did not possess a precise definition of it's meaning. Consulting Webster's, 'eclectic' describes endeavors 'composed of elements drawn from various sources'...'selecting what appears to be best in various doctrines'. I think this is also known as 'whatever works'. In these days of genre-bending music, it is becoming more difficult to categorize music, so I have decided to make up my own labels to better describe the songs on this CD. (1)'Aflame'--folk-hop, with a visit from the large band; (2)'Nutline'--funk-jazz, with an Oakland twist; (3)'Old Hippies Die Hard'--sky ballad, complete with tie-dye arrangement; (4)'Bastards'-acid-fusion rock; (5)'Things Are Lovely'-sub-urban political blues; (6)'If'-funk-jazz meets Kipling; (7)'Here and Now'-neo-jazz-americana; (8)'My Home'-country-jazz anthem; (9)'Truly'-gospel jazz-waltz; (10)'Don't Look Down'-folk-jazz; (11)'Old James Dean'-country-jazz; (12)'Last Word'-metal-hop. So, these 12 songs are kind of like Texas weather: if you don't like a song, just hang around and conditions are bound to change. By the way, the 'aid' in 'Lemonade' reflects the commitment of New Day Music to donate 15% of the retail and online proceeds from this recording to four of my favorite charities: Amnesty International, Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, and Feed the Children. If you would like to self-designate a charity, write me at and receive a free packet with expanded liner notes and lyric sheets for the songs on 'Making Lemonade'. Write also, if you want to get on the Lemon-aid mailing list, or if you have questions about the songs and sounds on this recording. Critique from Frank Aguirre... 'You have just kicked my ass, there is so much good stuff on that CD, that I would like to plagiarize some of it. I don't want it all, just some. Let's start out with your vocals, real smooth, soul sounding and it makes you think and laugh.' I'm not getting any answers', don't tell the seekers that one it could throw a wrench in their day. 'Don't let them grind you down', I think you could sell that one. You have some real phrases tucked in there. Now the music, that's the stuff I would like to steal. I really like the changes, and the mix with just the right amount of ornate twists. Great guitar stuff. The real truth, I have a few CD's from friends that I listened to once, I love the guys but.... Your CD has me wanting to listen again, because there are layers in it. Also some of it just kicks you, like the first song.'
