Bottomland on CD

Killing roosters, drinking wine, near-death experiences and family--in other words, the nitty-gritty of life--form the heart and soul of a CD, 'Bottomland' by Augusta Bottoms Consort. All the music on 'Bottomland' was written by band members Michael Bauermeister, Gloria Attoun, Paul Ovaitt and Rebecca Mayer who have been playing together for twelve years and live near the fertile bottomland fields of the Missouri River. The band's acoustic syle is difficult to pigeonhole, drawing from folk, classical, rock and ethnic music. Each band member plays many instruments, embellishing the songs with virtuoso guitar, accordion, mandolins, acoustic bass, percussion, recorder, banjo, panpipe and dobro. In 'Coyote Life', Michael compares being self employed to being a wild animal in the woods and comforts us in the refrain 'Everything comes when I need it, never too late or too soon. It's the coyote life, hand to mouth, night to night from the warmth of the sun to the howl at the moon.' In Paul's song, Holy War, all four band member's voices blend in this haunting statement of the absurdity of war. In a French/English song 'Le Poisson', Gloria sings about her father who used to say 'This fish isn't good, it's eyes have no life and I can see that it's too small.' 'A Printer's Waltz' features double mandolins inspired by Gloria's Mediterranean heritage. 'A Place in My Mind' was written while traveling and is filled with images and questions about longing and destination and answers with 'sometimes all I need, is a place in my mind.' Take a trip to the country and lose your mind in Paul's song 'Wine God where myth meets reality. There are more songs on this CD....listen to them all. Each one has it's own story, it's own message, it's own charm. 'Bottomland' will take you on a musical journey from where you are to where the land meets the sky.
