Chime Mattis (CHEE-MAY)is eclectic and so is his music. Born in the United States, living throughout Latin America (the last ten years in Bahia, Brazil), his exposure to different cultures and traditions has greatly fed his outlook on life and music. Roots in rock, graduate of Cal Arts in World Music, three years at the Ali Akbar College of Music, two and a half at the Federal University of Bahia Brazil, and scores of masters classes and pilgrimages, he's extensively studied West African, North Indian, Balinese Gamelan, Traditional and Contemporary Western Music (as a player and composer). He's studied with some of the foremost masters in their respective fields: Alfred Ladzekpo, Ali Akbar Khan, Sri Swapan Chaudhuri, Pandit Taranath Rao, Amiya DasGupta, Mark Nauseef, Miroslav Tadic, Glen Velez, John Bergamo, Jamari Oliveira...he's recorded with Olodum in Brasil, Ariel Guzik in Mexico...He's composed for dance and theater. In 1996 he composed the music and songs for the award winning performance 'AnonimaIa.' In 1994, Chime rode solo for nine and a half months on a third-hand Yamaha dirt bike from Colorado, USA to Bahia, Brazil; through deserts, mountains, rivers and the Amazon Jungle, stopping along the way in indigenous villages as well as urban centers to document different traditional music and oral traditions. In Brazil, he co-founded the Band Chimpanzee Tree. They rehearsed in a studio on the seashore in a house he designed and built...the waves could often be heard slamming against the front wall in between songs. His musical life is also linked with his life as a writer. His songs reflect his search for truth and wisdom with a bit of the absurd and a little raunch thrown in for good measure. Though he has been exposed and influenced by a wide range of sources, he finds his own unique way of expressing them through American popular music. Map Home, his first CD, was recorded in Vienna and the United States.
