This renowned show is presented here complete for the first time, expertly mastered form the original acetates. Restored from a new transfer of original transcription discs and other sources by famed audio engineer John H. Haley, Garland's last Palace performance on February 24, 1952 has never sounded as good as on this JSP Records release, and now it is also heard complete. Garland would play the Palace again in 1956 and 1967, but it was the overwhelming success of this initial engagement that gave her wings to conquer other concert stages in the years to come. As the cover of the 1967 LP released to mark her return there states, Garland was \"at home\" at the Palace. On stage, on record, and on television, Garland performed her Palace medley in remembrance of all the legendary stars who played the theater before her. Today it is a privilege to hear the closing night of this unforgettable show that brought Garland to a new level of performing artistry.","brand":"JSP Records","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46364250996819,"sku":"2595909X","price":16.42,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/4253785.jpg?v=1790392361"},{"product_id":"darby-tarlton-788065774622","title":"Darby \u0026 Tarlton","description":"Tom Darby and Jimmie Tarlton were early country music's most important and popular duo; the body of work they recorded for Columbia Records between 1927 and 1933 ranks among the most hallowed in old-time music. After many ventures (he sold jewelry, ran shooting galleries and promoted wrestling), he decided to go into selling records. He found a run-down premises and did a deal to buy an old employer's stock of records for 15¢ each. Sales racks and listening booths came free. Most of his stock was hillbilly records. He was surprised when 'tall, gaunt-faced folks with the lonesome sound of the mountains in their talk' began to frequent his store and buy his records. The next step for Nathan was to start a label. In November 1943, his first artists were Merle Travis and Grandpa Jones. King began a blues series in August 1945 with Bull Moose Jackson first in line. Further early sessions included Slim Gaillard, Walter Brown, Annisteen Allen and Lennie Lewis with Harold Tinsley. Pianists Lee Brown and Jimmie Gordon and guitarist Johnny Temple soon followed. Joe Von Battle was another local music fan, who recorded local talent, and, who then sold the masters on to King. Much of Von Battle's roster was country-blues oriented, like harmonica players Robert Richard and Walter Mitchell. The sound that Nathan and Von Battle produced was crude but the performances had both authenticity and excitement. Principal among them was John Lee Hooker, the city's leading bluesman, happy to record for any label and adopt any name. On the recordings bought by King he refers to himself as 'Poor Slim' but the attempt at disguise was utterly pointless. Other artists included Detroit Count, Robert Richard, Walter Mitchell, Eddie Burns and Johnny Wright. Other bluesmen journeyed to Cincinnati to record, while Nathan also travelled to Chicago to oversee a number of sessions. These four CDs are in roughly chronological sequence to better illustrate artists' styles and their development.","brand":"JSP Records","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46364306702419,"sku":"536153X","price":27.57,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/2135431_77d17387-02bc-404c-ba43-f8ec88a7e493.jpg?v=1790320369"},{"product_id":"the-dixon-brothers-788065711320","title":"The Dixon Brothers","description":"This set spotlights two great brother acts of the '30s: The yodeling Callahan Brothers and the bluesy Dixon Brothers, plus offshoot groups 101 sides on 4 CDs! The most prolific included the Delmore Brothers, the Blue Sky Boys and the Monroe Brothers. This collection focuses mainly on Austin and Lee Allen. The first three CD's are devoted to them and the fourth deals with their fraternal contemporaries. By the early 1920's, already professional musicians, they settled in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Chattanooga would feature in a number of their titles to the extent they were dubbed the Chattanooga Boys. In Chattanooga the Allen's got on radio once or twice a week - a bonus because radio was then the most effective form of publicity. The result was lucrative bookings as far afield as Georgia. They also performed for medicine shows - the musicians gathered a receptive audience for the show owner to exploit. The Allen's seem to have entered the recording studio fairly seamlessly and they had decent record sales. They recorded regularly - most years twice or more. Their sales were sufficient for them to continue to record well into the 1930's - many musicians were discarded because of the depression. Possibly their best-selling title was the slightly risqué a New Salty Dog. Other good sellers were Jake Walk Blues and Reckless Night Blues. Inevitably new brother acts like the Shelton's, the Anglin's and the Crowder's overtook the Allen's, and a few of those are also included.","brand":"JSP Records","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46364365520979,"sku":"1448764X","price":27.57,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/2827185_32dfd925-3034-4e48-9994-3b97947d6a90.jpg?v=1790392361"},{"product_id":"out-of-chicago-the-chicago-blues-master-live-788065301729","title":"Out Of Chicago: The Chicago Blues Master Live","description":"Sophisticated, but still deeply Blues as guitarist, singer and songwriter. I had 'got my hands on' booking the First Burnley Blues Festival. I had Fenton Robinson on my wanted list for many years. A unique performer and stylist with an instantly recognizable style and sound. Sophisticated, but still deeply Blues as guitarist, singer and songwriter - and happily for me, a man who did not disappoint on arrival, either musically or as a genuinely nice guy.  Tracks 5 and 6 here are live at the Burnley Blues Festival in 1989 - Fenton cuts loose and so obviously feels comfortable. Tracks 1 to 4 were recorded a day or so later at the BBC studios in Manchester and have a terrific 'big' sound. The Norman Beaker Band backs and American musicians loved them. They were far from a revivalist or copyist Blues band - but genuinely contemporary and plugged into what was then a very exciting Manchester scene.  I have recently started to release live material from the Ecaussines Blues Festival held in Belgium from 1988 to 2013. On tracks 7 to 10 we have Fenton with a wonderful Chicago band and he's flying. These 1992 recordings prove that he was out there working and still playing that lovely style of his to very enthusiastic audiences. UK and European reissue record companies were researching the vaults of US Blues and R\u0026amp;B record labels from the pre-war era and the 1940s, '50s, '60s and '70s - with new album releases appearing almost weekly. Long forgotten and obscure blues artists were rediscovered. Importantly, new names were also emerging on the US blues scene - many of them featured on this JSP compilation from the era. Listening to a demo of this compilation the memories came flooding back: a self-produced cassette from Larry Garner, then a part-time blues musician in Baton Rouge arriving in the post; an 'out of the blue' phone call from Otis Grand hustling for his new R\u0026amp;B band; seeing Joe Louis Walker play jaw dropping slide guitar at the Half Moon in Putney; and being blown away by the unknown Larry McCray on BBC2's 'The Late Show' in 1990. Steve Coleridge sent demos from Baton Rouge and interviews with local blues artists including Oscar Davis and T-Bone Singleton. A Dallas correspondent pushed a young blues guitar hot shot Tutu Jones who debuted for JSP in 1994. Talented musicians kept in contact including California singer and guitarist Kirk Fletcher who cut his debut for JSP in 1999 and guitarist, singer and producer Andrew 'Junior Boy' Jones - who also debuted for JSP in 1997. Junior Boy - who had played in bands behind Freddie King, Bobby Patterson, R.L. Griffin and Charlie Musselwhite - had been a long time correspondent sending 45s issued on his own Galexc label. But it wasn't plain sailing. There were risks - tours had to be booked (sometimes in untried venues); publicity had to be distributed; backing musicians, transport and accommodation arranged and money was always too tight to mention. John Stedman put his money where his mouth was, single-handedly running tours, getting artists to venues, into studios and releasing a stream of excellent contemporary blues albums on JSP. At the start of their career, their then innovative approach, superseded many pioneer country artists. Toward the end of their career they adapted to the sounds of the 1940s and '50s, arguably pioneering the rockabilly sound. Alton usually took lead vocals, but they could switch high and low parts between them. Their influence on The Monroe Brothers is undoubted. Apart from harmony singing, their recordings are characterised by clear diction and clean-cut guitar playing. Born in Alabama in the early 20th century Alton and Rabon were sons of tenant farmers. Seeking better land, they moved to Tennessee. Their fortunes did not improve. The family worked on other farms as day laborers. These tough experiences would re-emerge in Delmore songs. Alton later said that the shadow of poverty never quite left them. But their mother could play and read music. She taught Alton and, settling on guitar, he became a fine musician. He also attended gospel singing schools. The early interest in gospel music was later reflected in their use of sacred material which continued throughout their career. Later, in the 1940s and early 1950s, even when they had a string of nationwide hits, they insisted on recording gospel material. By 1926 The Delmores were already working on their harmony singing and instrumental work. At some point Alton had bought a tenor guitar. Taught by Alton, Rabon could play it by the time he was ten - apparently using banjo chords. Alto chose the tenor guitar - smaller than the standard six-string guitar and having only four strings - after he'd seen a vaudeville double act use one. It was an example of their willingness to step outside rigid country traditions. By the end of their careers (Rabon died from lung cancer in 1952) the brothers had been Opry stars (and fallen out with the Opry) and written over 1000 songs including Freight Train Boogie - a key link in the Rock 'n' Roll story.","brand":"JSP Records","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50440004534355,"sku":"NAV577272","price":27.57,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/636838_bf3bf4cc-737d-408b-9cda-ef757f083999.jpg?v=1790458352"},{"product_id":"smilin-through-singles-collection-1936-47-788065907129","title":"Smilin Through: Singles Collection 1936-47","description":"","brand":"JSP Records","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":50440279031891,"sku":"PID590712","price":26.91,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/1884721_1baa2615-b472-44dd-a7e1-73a36b99a27d.jpg?v=1790197920"}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/collections\/DD-JSPRecords-0719-Rhero_1.jpg?v=1791910382","url":"https:\/\/www.deepdiscount.com\/collections\/jsp-records.oembed","provider":"Deep Discount","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
