For a brief moment in time it looked as if Los Angeles based power metal band Malice would assume a position as one of the leading bands of the era, following hot on the heels of big seller's such as RATT, Mötley Crüe and Dokken. However, because of various frustrations and delays the band's debut album In The Beginning... largely underachieved, leaving them cast adrift as followers rather than trend setters. It was a blow that other similar acts may not have recovered from but for Malice it was the catalyst that spurred them on to even greater creative heights. One of the problems the band originally faced was an interminable delay with the recording of their debut album. This time around the band played it hard and fast, recruiting seasoned British producer Max Norman (Ozzy Osbourne, Y\u0026amp;T, Savatage), a man used to cranking up the energy level and making records that not only sounded great but also on-point. Issued in 1986, on the Atlantic label, the album far surpassed the quality of their debut record, attracting stellar reviews and setting the scene for intensive live work. With it's razor-sharp guitar work and concise song writing the record boasts a number of highlights, including 'Against The Empire', 'Chain Gang Woman' and the title track itself, arguably the band's finest moment. Sadly however, despite a valiant attempt, momentum could not be restored and with main man Jay Reynolds opting to join Megadeth the band soon disbanded.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46145089273939,"sku":"2362463X","price":15.05,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3427317.jpg?v=1788490299"},{"product_id":"mother-s-finest-0827565031825","title":"Mother's Finest","description":"","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46168364974163,"sku":"2348058X","price":14.12,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/1081895_9a9cf52b-1c36-4ba1-a425-eb35c7369278.jpg?v=1788673900"},{"product_id":"d-molls-1902969591348","title":"D'Molls","description":"Digitally remastered edition of this 1988 album from the L.A. glam rockers. D'Molls sported hair big enough to hide the Empire State building inside, pants so tight that their legs looked like pipe cleaners and enough mascara and lipstick to supply a beauty pageant. That they stood out as the potential kings of the scene was not in question. Originally formed in Chicago by vocalist Desi Rexx and guitarist S.S. Priest, and with connections to Diamond Rexx, Cheap Trick and Enuff Z'Nuff, the band eventually moved to Los Angeles in an effort to solidify not only their line up but also their reputation. The LA and Sunset Strip scene welcomed them with open arms, leading to a contract with Atlantic Records. Issued in 1988, their debut album established them as one of the rising glam rock acts of the time, chasing at the heels of such big sellers as Poison, Mötley Crüe and RATT. Sounding not unlike acts from the time, such as Jetboy, Faster Pussycat and Shotgun Messiah, the album is cocked and loaded with prime slices of provocative anthems, such as 'Crimes Of Fashion', 'All I Want', 'Dressed To Thrill' and 'A-C-T-I-O-N'. A power trio that barely registered on the radar, despite the members' impressive musical accomplishments, that were very much in keeping with the late '70s hard rock zeitgeist. It was, in all fairness, a strange state of affairs that belied the quality of the music and drew attention to the fast shifting sands and volatile nature of the music business. They were formed by two former members of Ted Nugent's band; singer\/guitarist Derek St. Holmes and bassist Rob Grange. Nugent, of course, was one of the biggest names on the hard rock scene during the second half of the decade, but it remained largely unknown that the vocals on Ted's records were mostly supplied by St. Holmes, a man that had lived in the shadow of Ted's enormous presence. Joining them on drums was Denny Carmassi whose accomplishments already included a four album stint with Montrose, one of the era's most revered acts. He was also a member of Sammy Hagar's solo band, appearing on two of his albums. Enlisting the help of producer Mike Flicker (Heart, Trooper) the band recorded their sole album in Seattle, for the Warner Brothers label, establishing a sound very much informed by their previous outfits, yet keeping a keen eye on the future. For most people the results are of no great consequence but occasionally, the repercussions - especially with years of hindsight to put the loss into perspective - are truly lamentable. The failure of Valentine's sole album is one such case in point. If any melodic rock band should have made a huge international splash then this should have been the one. Formed in New York during the mid-'80's and fronted by the sensational vocalist Hugo Valenti, the band soon made friends amongst the NY music business cognoscenti, leading to major management opportunities (Michael Bolton's manager Louis Levin) and a coveted major label deal with Columbia Records. It was easy to see why they attracted such a passionate reaction, armed with music that was not only powerful and memorable but also displayed a songwriting ability that left the competition in the dust. Amazingly the band's fortunes took a nose dive when executive changes at the label left them high and dry, forcing them to switch to another company, Giant Records, helmed by industry heavyweight Irving Azoff. Produced by Neil Kernon (Autograph, Queensryche, Lynch Mob) the album was eventually released in late 1990, and it received a great reception from the melodic rock aficionados. Packed with incredible songs, ranging from gilt-lined AOR such as 'Runnin' On Luck Again', 'Too Much Is Never Enough', to the pomp blast of 'Where Are You Now' and Once In A Lifetime'. But the icing on the cake must surely be 'Never Said It Was Gonna Be Easy', one of the greatest power ballads of all time.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46191223242835,"sku":"2044740X","price":16.24,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3788643_83eea276-7a9d-416d-adab-0cd40faa3d76.jpg?v=1788904306"},{"product_id":"for-madmen-only-1902957598960","title":"For Madmen Only","description":"Digitally remastered edition. The heat and humidity of Houston, Texas has nurtured many fine acts, not least of course ZZ Top. Atomic Opera were one such outfit playing music that, in a way, was out of this world, fusing the progressive elements of days gone by while charting a contemporary path to future glory. Led by talented frontman and guitarist Frank Hart, this enigmatic quartet were very much part of the spiritually inclined Houston cabal assembled by mogul, manager and producer Sam Taylor; a man who had discovered and nurtured Kings X to worldwide attention. Atomic Opera were, it must be said, cut from the very same musical cloth as Kings X, laying down a sound that was thick and boisterous but embedded with subtlety and intelligent arrangements. It was also a sound that fused the popular grunge movement with traditional hard rock styling. Issued in 1994, For Madmen Only looked set to make quite a splash. It's solid and muscular sound garnered the attention of traditional metal heads but also appealed to those whose tastes craved a more contemporary fix. For most fans of strident and forceful AOR, Peter Cetera would not, under normal circumstances, be their first port of call. Having been a founder member and lead vocalist with horn rock band Chicago, his background was firmly in another musical world but this, his debut solo album, showcased a desire to break free of those chains and strike out in a new direction, a solo career that turned heads and eventually led to his departure from the mother ship. Times had been disappointing for Chicago, their 14 album run at Columbia records was abruptly terminated in 1981 when they were perceived as being irrelevant to the current market. Cetera himself had actually begun to record a solo album and was half way through the project when news came of not only Chicago's ill fortune, but also of the cancellation of his own project. Fortuitously Chicago were picked up by the Warner Brother's label who also exercised the option on his solo album, which was completed and released by their Full Moon subsidiary. Issued in 1981 and produced by himself and Jim Boyer (Billy Joel, Steve Winwood), the album was quite a revelation to those who expected to hear a mellow example of his work with Chicago. The record, instead, was a punchy example of contemporary AOR, fuelled by crunchy guitar (featuring Steve Lukather and Chris Pinnick) and designed to fit in seamlessly with the work of say, Journey and Toto. Gary Wright's place in musical history was undoubtedly secured by the huge international hit single 'Dream Weaver', a recording that still has an afterlife to this day. But that wasn't the first time Wright had generated interest in his musical career. Back in the late '60s this New Jersey born musician relocated to the UK and, on the encouragement of Island Records boss Chris Blackwell, joined forces with Spooky Tooth, one of the most respected acts of the time. When Spooky Tooth broke up, Wright moved back to America and secured a prestigious solo deal with the Warner Brothers label, recording the Dream Weaver album which proved to be an unexpected success, selling close to a million copies. Refocusing his attention, he quickly set about recording the follow up album, once again recorded in Los Angeles, and building on the minimalist, layered keyboard style that he had become known for. It also featured a few of his highly regarded touring musicians such as drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist David Foster and future Toto bassist Steve Porcaro. Partly spiritual in nature the tracks appear to conjoin both lyrically and musically. There is a decidedly progressive rock feel to the presentation, partly driven by precision musicianship and expansive arrangements. It's highly unlikely that you'd have wagered that a former member of early '70s hard rock band Spooky Tooth would resurface later that decade with a major selling solo album and an all persuasive, soft rock, hit single 'Dream Weaver'. It was a remarkable achievement and one that elevated Gary Wright to a new audience, allowing him the space to develop a solo career that continues to this day. Born in the USA, Wright moved to the UK and joined Spooky Tooth at the suggestion of Island records Chief Chris Blackwell. It was a match made in heaven but, as these things often pan out, the band's commercial appeal waned, leaving Wright with little choice but to return to the USA and contemplate a solo career. Securing a recording deal with Warner Brothers records, he set about taping a series of demos with just keyboards and a synthesizer. This combination of instruments produced a fascinating sound and one that he continued to pursue on the finished record. The Dream Weaver album was issued in 1975 and spawned the enormously successful us #2 hit single of the same name. It was an instant classic and a song that continues to be heard around the world to this day on radio, TV and in movies. Remarkably, the album also contained a successful follow up hit single, 'Love Is Alive', a similarly structured track built on synths and a funky backbeat. When it comes to extracurricular collaborations and spin-off bands, they are, more often than not, prone to malfunction or disappointment, the sum of the parts normally being far inferior to the main attraction. In the case of Shaw Blades this wasn't the case as the partnership produced a surprisingly attractive musical communion, with enough of their familiar styles mixing with a fresh approach. The collaborators in question here are guitarist and vocalist Tommy Shaw, previously a lynch pin with multiplatinum pomp rockers Styx, and bassist Jack Blades who infiltrated the charts as a member of melodic rockers Night Ranger. The two initially worked together (alongside Ted Nugent) as members of the platinum selling hard rock band Damn Yankees, before embarking, during a lull in DY activities, as the high-profile Shaw Blades partnership. It was, in many respects, a marriage made in heaven, the two musicians being uniquely compatible and they produced songs of a timeless and compelling nature. Enlisting the help of producer Don Gehman (best known for his work with John Cougar Mellancamp) and issued in 1995, the duo set about constructing a record that was less hard rock and more rootsy, inviting comparisons to similarly less 'full-on' acts, such as the Spin Doctors, Riverdogs and Crowded House. Above all, the album was a terrific vehicle for the duo's magnificent, mostly acoustic driven, songwriting abilities, including the stand out tracks: 'My Hallucination', 'I Stumble In' and 'I'll Always Be With You'. Sadly, the album flew in the face of the prevailing musical climate of grunge leaving them undeservedly high and dry.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46202307510355,"sku":"2162789X","price":8.58,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3427318_8439981e-3edb-46d6-86b2-48caea841f44.jpg?v=1788959514"},{"product_id":"water-190296951091","title":"Water","description":"Digitally remastered deluxe edition includes 12 page full color booklet with 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork with unpublished photos and new interview. Saigon Kick'S Fortunes were radically reshaped with the release of their second album, The Lizard and it contained the hit single 'Love Is On The Way'. It was a track that made them MTV stars, helping to achieve a gold album. This was a major coup for this much-loved Florida four piece that had been signed to Atlantic Records via the imprint Third Stone, a company owned by Hollywood A-Lister Michael Douglas. However, despite these achievements, all was not well within the band's ranks. Bassist Tom DeFile and vocalist Matt Kramer had left the band. Kramer had clashed with main songwriter Jason Bieler and it was mutually agreed that the only way to solve the problem was for Matt to depart. Not surprisingly this move left the label somewhat confused as the project was set to move to another level of success. As with the previous record, it was agreed that Bieler could not only self-produce and record mainly in Sweden, but also take on the role as lead vocalist. It was a brave move and not one without reservations from various interested parties. Issued in 1993, Water was actually another comprehensive statement of intent. It signaled a move towards experimentation but the original framework was still intact. Hard riffing but melodic tracks, such as 'One Step Closer' and 'Torture' nestled comfortably with such wide screen pop psych fare as 'Sgt. Steve', 'Close To You' and 'Fields Of Rape'. There's no getting away from it, during the early '90s, there were an enormous amount of hard rock bands that, although extremely talented, failed to connect with an audience. This was primarily due to the shifting sands of time and taste, with the media almost exclusively focused on the sounds of Seattle, and, in particular, the emerging grunge movement. It was this obsession with a new trend that resulted in a number of perfectly serviceable groups being consciously side-lined. Saigon Kick was one such example. Formed in Florida during the late 80s, this storming four man unit, led by vocalist Matt Kramer and guitarist Jason Bieler, crafted a particularly potent brand of hard rock that relied as much on power pop as it did on heavy riffs. It was an interesting twist on traditional rock and much edgier, leading to valid comparisons with other similar groups such as Love\/Hate, the Wildhearts, Redd Kross, Cheap Trick and Kings X. There was also a perceptible psychedelic tinge to the arrangements helping the band to rise above the standard competition by a considerable margin. Produced by Michael Wagener (Skid Row, Extreme, Ozzy Osbourne), and released on Atlantic records (via Michael Douglas's Third Stone imprint), the record had been taped at a frantic pace in Los Angeles. Released in 1991 it sold well and quickly established the band as exciting contenders. Several of them were going global, such as Rush, Triumph and April Wine, but it was at a grass roots level that the real impact was being felt, with Kick Axe being at the sharp end of this new wave of maple leaf metal. Following on the heels of their debut album, Kick Axe got right back in the saddle with a well-crafted follow up; Welcome To The Club, produced, once again, by Spencer Proffer (Quiet Riot, King Kobra, W.A.S.P.) and his, for this record, assistant Randy Bishop. It was a far more mature recording, exuding a new level of sophistication by bringing in to play the sort of sound being pioneered by artists such as Queensryche and Dio. They didn't, however, take their eyes off the prize, keeping brute force to the fore and all hands on the steering wheel. We've said it once and, no doubt, we'll be saying it many more times in the future, but Memphis, despite it's authentic blues heritage, gave birth to a number of great rock acts that are still remembered with great affection, despite the fact that they may not have topped the national or, indeed, international charts. Chief amongst them were Target and Creed. Two bands that gave it their all, recording for major labels and making a splash that still shake the foundations to this day. For Creed the road to recognition was, like most acts of the era, strewn with disappointment, and difficulties that ultimately brought the band to it's knees, despite valiant attempts to overcome the obstacles. Signed to the prestigious Elektra\/Asylum label (home of the Eagles) the band s initial prospects looked bright but progress would soon grind to a halt when they were paired with a country-pop producer who toned down the band's hard rock edge, looking to tame their sound and position them closer to the AOR style popular at the time. But the album didn't neuter their style completely, and leaves us in no doubt about the band's hard rock heart. Canadian rock has always been highly regarded amongst discerning heavy metal fans. In general, the quality of the craftsmanship, songwriting and playing is, in many respects, superior to any other country in the world, lending the acts an air of confidence and accomplishment that has always impressed. Kick Axe were, it must be said, one of the best Canadian hard rock acts that emerged during the early eighties, rubbing shoulders with other hot contenders such as Helix, Coney Hatch and Anvil to name but a few. The Saskatchewan based five piece were initially formed by two brothers, that's Larry and Brian Gillstrom, together with bassist Victor Langen, all spurred on by the onslaught of British metal acts such as Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Their intention was to craft a unit that embraced all the cut and thrust of the original genre, while injecting their sound with a melodic and contemporary edge. Signing to CBS Records in Canada the band was then, surprisingly, taken under the wing of Pasha Records in the USA, home of multiplatinum sellers Quiet Riot. Produced by Spencer Proffer (Quiet Riot, King Kobra, W.A.S.P.) and originally issued in 1984, the album contains a sterling selection of tracks that place the band center stage in the burgeoning mid 80s hard rock renaissance, and give vocalist George Criston room to impress at every turn. Back in the late '80s, rock music appeared to be splitting into two fractions; melodic hard rock and thrash metal. Although these two camps were, in effect, polar opposite, fans of either were always appreciative of the aesthetics of both. At the heavier end of the spectrum bands such as Slayer, Megadeath and Metallica were enjoying a wave of popularity that had started to influence a number of younger acts, including Sepultura, Prong, Pantera and... Wrathchild America. Based on America's east coast, the band, initially just called Wrathchild, developed a following and style that would eventually lead to a shot at the big time with major label powerhouse Atlantic Records. Recorded in Los Angeles, with seasoned engineer\/producer Mark Dearnley (AC\/DC, Krokus, Circus Of Power), Climbin' The Walls was set to become a cornerstone release in the world of thrash and power metal, but plans were delayed by the intervention of a British glam metal band using the same name. Issued with a cease and desist order the US band, at the eleventh hour, adopted the amended moniker of Wrathchild America. This necessary last minute name change added an element of confusion to the album launch. Very much in tune with the times, heavy, raw and packed with explosive firepower, the nine tracks fitted the genre perfectly, combining thrash, speed and progressive metal in one glorious bundle. It was rightly given as most rock fans who heard it were gobsmacked by it's musical sophistication. The song writing was off the hook and Paul Sabu's majestic voice positioned him as one of the most talented melodic rock performers on the scene, outclassing the competition by a country mile. The album became a bench mark in the development of melodic hard rock. Paul's songwriting had always been superlative but the Only Child album moved his craft to another level. As one of the main movers and shakers of the Los Angeles Sunset Strip rock scene during the late 80s, Warrant made a huge impact at every level, helping to define not only a musical movement but also establishing a commercial breakthrough that astounded the naysayers. It was a golden time for not only the music of the era but also Warant directly, whose presence on MTV was virtually permanent. Like most bands, the formation of Warrant mutated through a number of line ups, but it eventually settled to feature vocalist Jani Lane, an appointment that ignited the band's creativity and placed them on the path to gold and glory. But it wasn't an easy ride, with a number of setbacks frustrating progress, including a brief encounter with the Prince's Paisley Park organization which bankrolled a demo that then received a number of rejections from most record labels. Eventually however, with the help of major management, the band signed to Columbia Records and commenced their rise to stardom. Originally issued in January 1989, the album was produced by Beau Hill (RATT, KIX, Winger etc) and set in motion a rapid rise to fame, which came as little surprise to those who had been following the band from the sidelines. For the most part, Frank Marino was perceived by the music business, and the majority of his fans, as a red-hot guitar player capable of laying down riffs and solos like they were going out of fashion. However, that overall impression belied his musical depth as a musician with a deep understanding of composition and arrangement. For Frank, despite his reputation for endless soloing, the goal was always about crafting songs that had meaning and weight. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than on the Juggernaut album. Recorded and released in 1982, the record showcases Frank in spectacular form, setting out a stall that solidly welds his penchant for blistering hard rock and memorable songs. The title track alone is arguably his greatest triumph, fusing a rock solid riff with a synthetic dusting of melody. Indeed, it became one of Frank's most successful tracks, nearly nudging him into the upper reaches of the American rock charts. And that song is not alone as there are several equally impressive examples, such as 'Midnight Highway' and the brilliantly evocative 'Stories Of A Hero'. Sadly for Frank, this was the point, after seven albums recording for Columbia Records, at which he and the label reached a creative impasse, resulting in him leaving the company and vowing never to record for a major label again. It was certainly a shame as, at long last, it seemed that he'd made a creative breakthrough, pointing him to a whole new level of creativity.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46249960767571,"sku":"1794115X","price":14.32,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3564723.jpg?v=1789295510"},{"product_id":"wants-you-5055300389053","title":"Wants You!","description":"Digitally remastered edition including 16 page full color booklet with 3,500 word essay, enhanced artwork and full artist involvement. Their debut album was, in turn, feted and praised, but failed, despite being championed by Ronnie James Dio, to connect commercially with the record buying public. Pretty soon, they were being overtaken by fellow contenders such as Quiet Riot, Mötley Crüe and Dokken. Despite the lack of achievement, the band was ushered back into the studio to record a follow up album, Rough Cutt Wants You! Issued in 1986. NYC, for all it's bravado, was actually more enamored by the burgeoning alternative and power pop scene, scratch below the surface though and you could find several hard rock acts storming through, sticking bravely to a diet of tough-guy guitar work and well written melodic songs. Step forward Mayday, one such example of the city's hard rock counter movement. Based in NYC, but with roots in Chicago, Mayday's debut album, for the well-respected independent label A\u0026amp;M, certainly put them on the map, helping to earmark them as an outfit to watch. The label's belief carried forward to the recording of their second album, albeit with a slightly revised line up but still retaining key member's, guitarist and song writer Randy Fredrix and vocalist Steve Johnstad - the dynamic duo's creativity reaching a new level of confidence. Issued in 1982, Revenge showcases the band sharpening their approach and toughening up their chops, but without sacrificing a well-honed sense of melody and execution. They couldn't have been more different; five musical rouges from London who had, almost by accident, joined a NWOBHM street party and found themselves sticking out like dandies in bare knuckle cage fight. That these guys were unique was the least of their worries. Fortunately, they made amends by tooling up with razor sharp riffs, knock out hooks and raw production. They were also fronted by a charismatic lead vocalist that taunted the crowd by blowing kisses to bikers. Wasted Youth was the band's second album for Jet Records and one that was recorded in two phases, amidst getting bogged down in the sort of unnecessary label aggro that had already started to erode their faith. Learning from their previous visual faux pas, they decided to dial down the glam look and concentrate on beefing up their sound, with tough guy bravado and a dress code to match. It was a brave attempt to redress the balance but, despite the coordinated effort and finely honed material, the project was still not firing on all six with a label still unable to connect the dots. Wasted Youth, sadly, was lost in space, a fate accentuated by the departure of guitarist Phil Collen, accepting an offer to join Def Leppard for their epoch making Pyromania album. It's magnificent record and one that should have catapulted Danny to much wider acclaim.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46256133800019,"sku":"2504072X","price":12.69,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/4115664.jpg?v=1789339915"},{"product_id":"in-the-raw-special-deluxe-collector-s-edition-5056321617637","title":"In The Raw (Special Deluxe Collector's Edition)","description":"Digitally remastered and expanded edition. Power trio The Rods formed in Upstate New York during the late seventies and achieved the distinction of being one of the very few hard rock bands to have signed, in 1981, with major label Arista records under the counsel of industry heavyweight Clive Davis. The band also secured much support from the heavy metal underground, which helped them to establish a solid beachhead of two albums that the fans enthusiastically connected with. Sadly, in the big picture, Arista's lack of expertise in the hard rock world left the band floundering and commercially underachieving. By the time of 'In the Raw' the band had departed from Arista and turned instead to well-respected independent label Shrapnel, helmed by guitar aficionado Mike Varney. It was, in many respects, an inspired move, despite the fact that the album was recorded on a shoestring budget with the intention to re-record it later for bigger label. So, in effect the tracks are little more than demos but the energy and enthusiasm is brilliantly captured and showcases the band in a raw (hence the title!), undiluted and resolutely determined fashion. Despite the lack of studio finesse the songs are perfectly formed, the band having rehearsed them to achieve the maximum effect. Tracks such as 'Hurricane', 'Witch's Brew', 'Street Fighter' and 'Hot City' showing what a powerful unit the band had grown into. The album eventually appeared in 1983, a year after they had supported Iron Maiden on a full UK tour, a set of dates that enhanced their reputation as one of the best US bands following in the NWOBHM slipstream.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46256144253011,"sku":"2349505X","price":11.5,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3877568_090a5164-1a08-4b8f-b4df-818c8a309190.jpg?v=1789337512"},{"product_id":"back-to-back-5055300390240","title":"Back To Back","description":"Digitally remastered edition of the second album from the Wisconsin hard rock quartet. There's no doubt that the 1970s were a golden time for blues infused rock, but it was also a period where the competition for attention was cut throat. For Milwaukee, Wisconsin based four piece Bad Boy the odds were stacked against them, even though they had secured a coveted record deal with the United Artists label and had already gained a foothold with a well-received debut album. Stepping back into the studio they were a far more worldly wise team, and they crafted a record that sat easily beside master craftsmen of the era such as Aerosmith, Derringer, Cheap Trick and Kiss. Originally issued in 1978, Back To Back made for solid listening, focusing on melodic catchy songs with rock solid riffs. Tracks such as 'I Just Wanna Love You' and the funk infused 'Keep It Up' leave no stone unturned in their quest to impress. The record shot to #8 on the US Billboard chart led by the infectious hit single 'Fantasy', a song that cemented his reputation as one of Canada's most talented rock singer\/songwriters, alongside Bryan Adams. It was a commercial crown that perfectly fitted this Montreal native, with many believing that it was the opening salvo to a career that would continue to blossom and reap ever increasing rewards. Sadly, that was not to be. Despite a valiant and comprehensive second album, 'Subject... Aldo Nova', his commercial star began to fade leaving all eyes on this third album 'Twitch'. Recorded in 1985 and released in the same year, the record was a determined effort to return to the satisfying and exciting style of his debut with immediately catchy pop rock tracks boasting copious melody. Despite a return to his roots, the results were unfairly overlooked, resulting in the record failing to chart and causing friction with his record label. Aldo vowed not to release further solo albums unless he had complete control over his output, something not achieved until 1991. Despite the strain between Nova and his label at the time, 'Twitch' is a meaningful and impressive statement harboring a number of instantly catchy songs that are injected with solid hooks and fine guitar playing; tracks that should have been the launch pad to far greater success. Recorded in New York, the album is also notable for guest vocals from Michael Bolton and Fiona (Flanagan). Some artists may not have reached the huge sales figures of many superstar acts but their influence was significant on the fan base that they did acquire. Zebra were one such act. A three piece power trio, they were a band that, although selling reasonably well, never quite reached the summit of their commercial potential but attracted a hugely committed following, based solely on the quality of their output... and it is a sound that still has power and presence today. Signed to Atlantic Records, the band's first album was actually the fastest selling debut in the label's long and impressive history. Their second album No Tellin' Lies failed to capitalize on this unexpected good fortune, but the quality of material was just as impressive. With the obliquely titled third record (a reference to how long it had taken to record it!) the band took stock and pledged to make the best record of their career. 3.V is actually an incredible creation. Melodic yet forceful, it moves them firmly away from their Led Zeppelin roots to a unique world, focusing on their brilliant arrangements and great songs. It also moved the band in a far more progressive rock style attracting comparisons to Rush but with their own melodic sensibility. The musicianship is phenomenal and leader Randy Jackson's vocals are wonderfully expressive, demonstrating an extraordinary range. Truly, it is one of the best hitherto underexposed rock albums of the 1980s.","brand":"Rock Candy","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":46256163127379,"sku":"1695890X","price":15.05,"currency_code":"USD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0732\/1937\/5187\/files\/3290893_34f882e4-ce08-4687-ab1d-cdd9fc22e725.jpg?v=1789336331"},{"product_id":"dawn-patrol-special-deluxe-collector-s-edition-5055300387745","title":"Dawn Patrol - Special Deluxe Collector's Edition","description":"Digitally remastered edition. One the greatest rock bands to emerge during the early Eighties was San Francisco based Night Ranger. Somewhat surprisingly, however, their origins originated from a very different musical background, most notably as members of a large-scale soul-funk cabal called Rubicon (a unit that had links to Sly Stone) who recorded two now largely forgotten, albums. Members of this unit coalesced under the handle of Ranger, and later, Night Ranger. Night Ranger's arsenal of formidable talent contained the twin lead guitar work of Brad Gillis and Jeff Watson and - unusually - two identifiable lead vocalists in bassist Jack Blades and drummer Kelly Keagy. It was this combination that afforded the band a unique sound, giving them an edge that distanced them from other similar sounding outfits. At one point, however, the band's very existence was thrown into jeopardy when Brad Gillis was tapped to replace the late Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne's Blizzard Of Oz. Fortunately this only turned out to be a temporary arrangement. Despite being turned down by every record company in the US, not once but twice, the band's debut album 'Dawn Patrol', originally issued in 1982, on the newly-formed Boardwalk label, was an immediate critical and commercial success, and boasted a cache of supremely catchy tracks, led by the triple knockout blows of 'Don't Tell Me You Love Me', 'Sing Me Away' and 'At Night She Sleeps'. By the time of the late 70s, rock music had coalesced into various styles and genres. One branch moving towards perfection and, by contrast, experimentation was accurately labelled pomp rock. It was a finely-honed amalgam of early seventies progressive rock, art rock and hard rock, bound together by a developed sense of melody and a keen feel for songwriting. The music world was on fire with such magnificent purveyors as Styx, Kansas, Starcastle, Saga and Trillion. These were acts that took their craft seriously, making sure that musicality and melody were at the very forefront of every move. ZON was no exception to the ensuing flood of young pomp rock hopefuls. Originating from Toronto, they garnered the attention of Epic records, who signed them hoping to score big with the band's unique brand of quirky, yet superbly crafted, rock that sounded not unlike a young Styx. It was a match made in heaven, with the results displaying a musical maturity that defied the band's relatively fresh faced status. For Legs it was an incredible achievement, having been cast aside for much of the late 80s as a band without a prominent sales base or indeed any chance of a revival. Issued in 1990, the record was considered a real return to form, many saying that it was the best release since their '70s heyday. For some reason, achieving the magical breakthrough had always slipped through his fingers. 'Full House' was another attempt to right wrongs. Frankie assembled a new backing band and recorded an LP with purposeful appeal crammed with a choice selection of freshly penned songs and well-chosen covers. Produced by Chris Thomas, who had scored success with overseeing records by Roxy Music, Badfinger, Procol Harum and also mixed Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon, the album provided yet another clear indication that Miller's talent had been hidden under a bushel for far too long. The opening track 'Be Good To Yourself' (written by Free bassist Andy Fraser) was selected as it's first single and finally gave him chart success in the UK. At this point Frankie's reputation was at an all-time high, giving his record company further belief that this was an act that would eventually reap justifiable rewards. The great thing about the record business during the 1970s was the fact that labels allowed bands to develop organically, often over several albums. For those of us with an interest in more obscure acts it provides a great education and Goddo were no exception. A predominantly hard rock, Canadian, power trio who's musical growth was spectacular, chomping their way through crunchy blues-based rock tracks and introducing some highly refined twists and turns such as horns and even an orchestra. An Act Of Goddo is the culmination of the band's insatiable appetite for pushing the envelope. Recorded and mixed not in their native Canada but this time in Orlando, Florida, the music is enhanced by a choice selection of tracks, written with one singular intention, to astound the listener. Produced, once again, by Thomas Morley-Turner (actually a pseudonym for band leader Greg Godovitz) the record benefits from some terrific tracks, including tough nut rockers such as 'So Walk On', 'Take Care', 'Work It Out' and arguably the band's greatest song, the English\/French lilting ballad 'Chantal'. Most spectacular however is the opening, and closing, instrumental 'Anacanapanacana', a musical palindrome performed by the Florida Symphony Orchestra consisting of a mash up of melodies found on the rest of the album. It's a great introduction and one that sets up - and ends - the rest of the record perfectly.
