Eastcote Sessions on CD

Chris Parker of the Vortex Jazz Club in London reviews 'The Eastcote Sessions': The third manifestation of the band Elephant comprises Steve Lodder (keyboards), Marc Parnell (drums), Robin Clayton (bass), Paul Nieman (trombone), Josefina Cupido (vocals, percussion) and Mornington Lockett (saxophones), but their approach (they play tuneful, tight, lightly funky jazz, featuring the occasional song by Cupido) will be (mostly) familiar to anyone who heard the band in either of it's two previous incarnations, a quintet centred on Cupido and an instrumental band utilising the first band's core players. This five-track CD contains a tune each by Nieman, Lodder and Clayton, plus an intriguing visit to John Warren's 'Bass Line Number One', all deceptively simple-sounding and immediately attractive selections that conceal considerable power, muscle and subtlety. The album's centrepiece, however, is an affecting sung ballad, 'First Kiss', with lyrics by David James and a hypnotically slow-building, plaintive tune by Cupido. Tasteful and restrained, yet unfussily musicianly, The Eastcote Sessions may not swagger or bluster, but is all the more effective for it.'
