Heinrich Schütz composed the Musikalische Exequien for the funeral of his patron Prince Heinrich Posthumus von Reuss. The work's three parts were to be performed during different sections of his funeral service. With this commissioned composition, Schütz created one of the most artistic and heartfelt works of mourning ever written. This superb Accent recording features an emotional and technically brilliant performance by Le Petite Bande led by Sigiswald Kuijken.
