Julia Mustonen in Recital on CD

Pianist Julia Mustonen's playing has been praised worldwide for it's fire and passion, and consequently she is making a name for herself throughout the Scandinavian countries and abroad. Born to a Finnish-Russian family, she began playing piano at the age of three. Hailed a prodigy during her childhood in Communist Siberia, she began giving concert tours at a very early age, sometimes under the harshest of conditions; she sometimes performed concerts in halls with temperatures of -10C, while outdoor temperatures reached -40C. While conditions at home were moderately better, a pot of hot water was nonetheless kept under the piano to keep her hands from freezing. These hardships have undoubtedly contributed to the depth of emotion, passion and temperament of her performances. Julia Mustonen has worked with such great artists as Staffan Scheja, Alicia de Larrocha, John O'Conor and Olli Mustonen. She has garnered many prestigious awards from The Cultural Foundation, Kordelini Foundation, Jenny ja Antti Wihuri Foundation, The Music Performance Promotion Centre in Finland, The Royal Academy of Music and The Ander Wall Foundation of Sweden. Julia Mustonen has also claimed top prizes in piano competitions domestically and internationally, most notably First Prize in the Nordic Blüthner Piano Competition, resulting in her obtaining of one of her most prized possessions, a Blüthner grand piano. In 2007 she had a critically acclaimed debut performance at the Gotland Chamber Music Festival where she got the following review: " ...the young pianist Julia Mustonen played "Pictures at an Exhibition" by Modest Mussorgsky. She delivered an interpretation that left us completely breathless. ...It has to be like that so that a soloist of great stand can go into the music, become one with the instrument...Julia was living inside the music with strong and sensible theatrical gestures, she was so physical and both caressing and taming the grand piano, as if it were a giant body. Brilliant playing and a long well-deserved applause, with her being called back to stage a number of times!" Soon, Julia, will have her debut concert with the Stockholm Royal Philarmonique Orchestra and she has just finished her tours playing the complete works of Claude Debussy.
