Prime Knot on CD

Stephanie Chou- alto saxophone, piano, voice Marcus Printup- trumpet, flugelhorn Joel Gombiner- tenor saxophone Jeremy Siskind- piano Daniel Ori- bass Ronen Itzik- drums All compositions by Stephanie Chou Produced by Stephanie Chou Music Direction by Patrick Zimmerli Executive Producer Joshua Feigenbaum To me, prime knots are infinitely beautiful. In mathematics, a knot is any embedding of a circle into 3-D Euclidean space, R3. Think of it as taking a piece of string, tying and twisting it up however you like (without passing the string through itself or cutting it), and then gluing the ends together. It is the same as a common knot, except the ends are stuck together creating a closed loop. In the same way a prime number is not divisible by any number other than 1 and itself, a prime knot cannot be decomposed as a connected sum of nontrivial knots. I associate different knots with different variations of the traditional Chinese tune, "Jasmine Flower." Variations, fresh takes on something old, create interest and beauty-- in math, music, and life. I hope you enjoy my music and would love to hear from you: scaltoids55@gmail.com Artist Bio: Stephanie Chou's compositions combine elements from classical and Chinese music with jazz harmonies. Her warm alto sound is rich with influences from many styles of music. Chou studied mathematics at Columbia University and also enjoys playing piano and skiing. The Steph Chou Project has performed at NYC venues including B.B. King's, Cleopatra's Needle, The Cutting Room, The Garage, and The Knitting Factory. Steph has also performed at Shea Stadium and led groups in performances at Carnegie Hall. During the summer of 2007, Steph explored the developing Beijing jazz scene, and performed at East Shore and D-22. In 2008 and 2009, Steph was awarded Columbia's Rapaport Prize for music. Currently, Steph studies saxophone and composition with Patrick Zimmerli. She has also studied with Ole Mathisen, Steve Wilson, Don Sickler, Ben Waltzer, and George Lewis. She grew up in Irvington, NY studying classical piano with Hui-Mei Lin and classical saxophone with Ken Dybisz. Steph is currently an artist assistant at Jazz at Lincoln Center and a math tutor at Bespoke Education. She also teaches math at the Bank Street School and teaches private music lessons. She has just recorded her first full-length album, PRIME KNOT, featuring Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trumpeter Marcus Printup. Steph continues to live and perform around New York City.
