PRESS REVIEWS 'OUR LADY'S SOPRANO' -BROTHER CRAIG DRISCOLL, CATHOLIC TWIN CIRCLE 'GLORIA IN EXCELSIS TO SOPRANO SOLOIST SUE ANN PINNER' -GERALD CARPENTER, SANTA BARBARA INDEPENDENT "This recording is a fair approximation of Heaven... 'gloria in excelsis' to Soprano Soloist Sue Ann Pinner." 'AVE MARIA IS THEME FOR SINGER' -KATHY PRICE, SANTA BARBARA NEWS-PRESS Soprano Sue Ann Pinner remembers well the first time she sang Charles Gounod's 19th Century arrangement of the Ave Maria. 'This deep piece and serenity came into me,' she said of the experience. 'I felt the presence of God. I felt her presence.' According to Carl Jung, the archetype of the blessed mother is deep in the collective consciousness of all human beings, Pinner said. 'That is why this music is so healing,' she explained. Since that first experience, Pinner has sung Ave Marias at every opportunity. Last year - along with the Santa Barbara Regional Choir and Organist Rev. Carroll Laubacher - she recorded a history of Ave Marias inside the acoustically resonant Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Only after Pinner and Laubacher began their two years of research did they realize that virtually all the great composers had written music to the ancient prayer. Beginning with a 13th Century Gregorian Chant, the world-class recording includes Ave Marias written by Mozart, Brahms, Verdi, and Rachmaninoff, as well as other sacred music. 'ILLUMINATING EXAMPLES OF CHORAL STYLES' -THE DIAPASON, An International Monthly Devoted to the Organ, the Harpsichord and Church Music Ave Maria. The Santa Barbara Regional Choir. Sue Ann Pinner, soprano soloist and director. Rev. Carroll G. Laubacher, S.J., organist. Here is a fine survey album of Marian anthems written during the past eight centuries. It is interesting to hear the same texts set in so many different ways, and an illuminating example of choral styles as they have changed and evolved through music history. The choir consists of 250 members of choirs from 38 parishes in the Santa Barbara area, and was recorded in 1990 at our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Montecito, California. An Allen organ is used to accompany the chorus. 'SOPRANO PINNER RECORDS ALBUM OF 'AVE MARIAS' ' -PAULA DOYLE, THE TIDINGS One impressive result of Sue Ann's reliance on Divine inspiration has been the recording and Christmas holiday release of a CD of music entitled 'Ave Maria' with 17 Marian hymns presented in historical order from Gregorian Chant to a Magnificat. 'This whole project was divinely guided,' explained Sue Ann who solos on the recording along wtih the Santa Barbara Regional Choir which she founded and directs. 'Every great master wrote music to the 'Ave Marias,' ' maintained Sue Ann. Verdi wrote an 'Ave Maria' on his deathbed.' Some of the more modern pieces are performed with symphony musicians backing the choir. Sue Ann wrote many of the orchestral arrangements herself. ALBUM NOTES Internationally known recording artist and composer, Sue Ann Pinner, is the winner of a 2000 Emmy Award for her singing portrayal of Marguerite in the television video FAUST. Sue Ann has released four recordings in the past eight years. Her first, AVE MARIA, is the top seller for Ave Maria Press of the University of Notre Dame and is hailed by the Santa Barbara Independent Review as "a fair approximation of heaven". Her best selling MARIACHI is a ground-breaking marriage of sacred and mariachi music and includes her creation, the Mariachi Ave Maria. On the third recording, MAGNIFICAT-THE DIVINE POWER OF SINGING, she recreates the solo she sang for Pope John Paul II at the historic Dodger Stadium Papal Mass in Los Angeles; she also performs her inspiring Amazing Grace/Ave Maria arrangement. ADOREMUS is Sue Ann's 2000 release. It is a small wonder that she has been named "Our Lady's Soprano" by America's largest Catholic publication, Catholic Twin Circle. IN LOVING MEMORY OF REV. CARROLL G. LAUBACHER, S.J. (1926-2006) ORGANIST, AVE MARIA RECORDING.
