San Francisco experimental pop duo Super Adventure Club was convened in 2007 by producer Michael Winger (Kronos Quartet, The Shins) and session drummer Jake Wood (Diego's Umbrella, Nya Jade) to explore pop music beyond the boundaries of genre. On their debut 2009 LP Üntz for Freshmaker Records, Wood plays drums, keyboards and sings simultaneously, while Winger plays keyboards, bass guitar and handles lead vocals. Singing in four languages, the duo shifts from Talking Heads-like indie rock to electronic dance music and beyond. Along with tours of the West Coast and the Pacific Northwest, Super Adventure Club also tours Spain, while writing and recording a second album. Veteran producer and performer Michael Winger was born in North Carolina and raised in Florida, playing piano by age five and guitar by age twelve. As R.E.M. galvanized the sound of southern indie rock in the '80s, Winger began playing locally, attending the University of Georgia, where he earned a degree in History with an emphasis in Chinese Communism. The lead guitarist for Athens, Georgia's Dayroom, Winger played almost 200 shows a year for eight years. He began producing, and moved to San Francisco, where he now holds court at the historic 1340 Mission recording studio and also runs the highly successful Flying Kitchen, a mobile recording operation. Jake Wood, an in-demand session drummer, music journalist (DRUM! Magazine, EQ), and drum instructor, was born in the Bay Area and grew up on a diet of punk, funk, and ska like Operation Ivy, Metallica, and Primus. Wood began taking drum lessons at age 11 and studied music theory at University of California Santa Cruz, where he earned a degree in Anthropology. Wood met Winger in 2004 during a session Winger was producing. Working on other artists' mellower tunes inspired the two to form their own uninhibited, nimble little act and exorcise their lurid lyrical fantasies of murder, death and love. With a militant rehearsal schedule, they discovered Super Adventure Club had influences as wide as Soul Coughing, Cake, Portishead, The Police, and Flight of the Conchords. They are essentially populists, writing danceable beats and singable choruses while eschewing any poe-faced sincerity. Neither considers themselves singers, so they explore percussive singing, and use phrases from Spanish, Russian, English and French. Super Adventure Club recorded Üntz live at Broken Radio and Woodshed Studios to better capture the fire of their live show. The 10-track LP includes stand out cuts "Mexican Gun Fight" and "Slay The Dragon". On the subsequent tour, SAC played all the parts live, avoiding all sequencers and loops, doing things the old fashioned way; with their bare hands. Super Adventure Club's multi-lingual multi-instrumentalism presses forward in 2010 as they craft a second, possibly more peaceful album, and, of course, continue to rock the party.
