Description

Sweetnighter - 180-Gram Black Vinyl [Import] on LP

Originally released in 1973, Sweetnighter marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of Weather Report, one of the most influential jazz-fusion groups of their era. While many of their contemporaries, including Herbie Hancock's Headhunters and The Mahavishnu Orchestra, enjoyed shorter lifespans, Weather Report continued to push musical boundaries throughout their 16-year career under the guidance of Joe Zawinul. Featuring a stellar line-up including Joe Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, Miroslav Vitouš, Andrew White, Herschel Dwellingham, Eric Gravatt, Muruga Booker and Dom Um Romão, the album captures the band at a creative turning point. Driven by Zawinul's fascination with groove, Sweetnighter introduced a funkier, more rhythmic direction, incorporating elements of R&B into the group's expansive jazz vocabulary. Highlights include the infectious "125th Street Congress" and the landmark "Boogie Woogie Waltz", while closing track "Non-Stop Home" offers an early glimpse of the signature sound that would come to define the band's later work. Pressed on 180-gram audiophile black vinyl, Sweetnighter remains an essential chapter in the story of jazz fusion.
