Aardappeleters on CD

'La tristesse durera toujours' (The sadness will last forever). These were the final words of Vincent van Gogh, the artist who saw the whirling resplendence of life's many colors as no one before him had and yet for whom amidst these colors there existed staggering isolation and infinite suffering. Indeed, before the color there was only sorrow, as is seen in the quiet, grimy faces portrayed in his first masterpiece, De aardappeleters (The Potato Eaters), peasants enjoying a meal of potatoes, resolved to the sadness of the potato, the object of their reality and source of their solidarity, peasants more disgusting than they are lovable (and lovable only on account of the sympathy they elicit), who know little and yet demonstrate much wisdom. For indeed, we must all resolve ourselves to our symbolic potatoes and find consolation in them. Thomas Kushin does just that in his album Aardappeleters, a musical meditation of resolve and futility consisting of a 45 minute long, lugubrious yet uniquely spirited alto saxophone improvisation recorded on a New England mountaintop, as well as a 34 minute ambient piece, which captures the winds of time and aims to prepare us for our inevitable non-existence (and thus may also be used as a soporific to be listened to at bedtime).
